Despite its size, Rotterdam is a surprisingly intimate city, as you will discover on this optional walking tour. In addition to its innovative architecture and exceptional dining establishments, this charismatic city is known for its sophisticated shopping venues, spirited nightlife, and trendy art scene. One of the city’s most dynamic structures is the bustling Market Hall, the largest indoor market in Holland, hosting more than 120 food vendors and restaurants. From fresh bread and locally-produced cheese to fresh-caught seafood and fragrant flowers, you’ll find it all under one roof. We’ll make a stop here and savor a selection of local specialties.
On this optional excursion, you’ll head to the historic village of Veere for a guided walking tour. This delightful destination, founded in the late 13th century when Wolfert Van Borssele established a ferry house here (“veere” is Dutch for “ferry”) is full of interesting buildings dating back several centuries. Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, French military commander and political leader Napoleon Bonaparte rose through the ranks of the French army, expanding his empire across central and western Europe. His reign finally came to end on June 18, 1815, when he was defeated by the combined forces of the Prussian and British armies, led by the Duke of Wellington.
