PACING: 7 cities in 13 nights with all 2 night stays except for 3 nights in Delhi and 1 night in Udaipur. Long flight to India. Travellers will fly from home city to New York, then fly Air India to Delhi, arriving at Delhi hotel at approx. 1:00 am on Day 3. Within India, 4 flights (about one hour each) with one pre-dawn departure on Day 14. Long transfer on Day 9 via motorcoach from Khajuraho to Jhansi with a stop for lunch and photo opportunity in Orchha, then continue by train from Jhansi to Agra. On last day of trip, late evening / early morning flight from Mumbai for long flight to New York.
Bhutan Pre-Extension: 2 flights and 2 short motorcoach trips (1 hour each). Long trip from U.S. to Delhi, then on to Bhutan before arrival at hotel. Afternoon free to rest up on arrival day.
Cochin Post-Extension: 2 flights. Evening flight from Cochin to Mumbai connects to late evening / early morning flight from Mumbai for long flight to New York.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Most sightseeing done on air-conditioned coaches with guides, with occasional walking tours and visits to markets and bazaars. Also a short boat ride, an elephant ride, and visit to villages. Because of the pace and moderate amount of walking and stair climbing, this trip is not recommended for anyone with difficulty walking. Early morning flights will require you to rise earlier than normal on a few days.
Bhutan Pre-Extension: Some walking on rough ground, steps, and uneven paths. Drive over 10,000-foot pass.
Cochin Post-Extension: Some steps and walking on uneven ground. Passengers must be able to climb from dock into smaller tour boats. Docks may have uneven footing.
CULTURAL FOCUS: India requires a heavy foreign culture adjustment for some. Travellers will at times encounter dust, pollution, heat, large crowds in cities, visible poverty, and beggars — all of which are part of the environment and culture of India. The different customs, foods, culture, and history are for many the most rewarding part of the experience. For those up for it, these challenges, as well as the beauty, spirituality, and diversity, make India a uniquely rewarding destination. Cultural Connections provide opportunities to meet the local Indian people.
Bhutan Pre-Extension: The Kingdom of Bhutan is one of the world’s most isolated, unmodernized countries. As such, it offers a unique opportunity to experience a place and a people unspoiled by tourism. The stunning landscapes, including views of the Himalayas, as well as the Vajrayana Buddhist culture make this a fascinating destination. Although the country is poor, extreme poverty and homelessness are rare.
SPECIAL FACTORS: Temperatures in India are at their highest during April, May, June and September. All hotels are modern, air-conditioned, and meet the best international standards. Travellers with any concerns about their fitness for this tour should discuss them with their physician. Please refer to Vantage’s wheelchair and handicapped traveller policy. The elephant ride in India can be uncomfortable, especially for those with back pain. Tap water is undrinkable in both India and Bhutan. Drinking bottled mineral water is suggested. Ice and cut salad are only safe in 5-star hotels, not in all other local restaurants.
Bhutan Pre-Extension: Bhutan does not have the heat of India. The extension will include two motorcoach rides over a pass to about 10,000 feet altitude. The balance of the time will be at approx. 6,000 to 8,000 feet in altitude. Because of the cooler climate in the mountains, it is recommended that you bring a sweater or light jacket for the mornings and evenings.
Air travel within India: Just one carry-on bag per passengers is permitted on internal (domestic) flights within India. Passengers are advised to lock checked luggage on internal flights.
Train travel in India: The train ride on the base program will be part of your India travel experience. Trains are the most common form of travel in India, which has the world’s largest rail network. However, train stations are very basic, often with no seating area or facilities. Vendors and beggars will often pass among the waiting passengers. Aboard the train, Vantage has reserved a seat for you in an air-conditioned car, where you will travel with local people and other international travellers. Snacks and water are available for purchase from train attendants; there is no bar or restaurant car. The train will have a lavatory, although it is generally not overly clean and you will need to supply your own toilet paper. Windows are often obscured by sun and dust screens, so the passing scenery may not be readily visible.
Travel to Bhutan (optional extension): Due to the special reservation policies of Bhutan’s official airline, Druk Air, reservations can only be ensured for bookings 120 days prior to the arrival date. Any new bookings within 120 days are subject to confirmation. Passport details are requested at time of reservation. Special cancellation terms will apply for this optional extension. |
