PACING: 6 destinations in 4 countries in 16 nights, with three 2-night stays, two 3-night stays, and one 4-night stay. There are four flights between destinations with one early departure. Flights range from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours. There are two 1.5 hours transfers to hotels. Others are 45 minutes or less. The longest transfer days involve about 7 hours of travelling with transfers and flights. The Namibia extension has several long drives on dirt roads with few facilities.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Travellers will use many kinds of transportation, including planes, motorcoaches, mini buses of various sizes, 10-passenger safari vehicles, boats, and cable car. There is easy to moderate walking, The most strenuous walking will be in the Zimbabwean Victoria Falls National Parks, in the Namibian village and between terminal buildings at Johannesburg Airport. Surfaces encountered will include dirt roads, paths, paving stones, and tile. Five airports are used on this trip and transiting in Johannesburg is a requirement on 4 occasions including the return journey to the USA. This airport can be tiring, especially with security lines, check-ins, and the prevalence of marble floors. Other airports are quite small and manageable.

The Namibia extension features moderate to heavy walking, and includes one two-story hotel without an elevator.

CULTURAL FOCUS: Most people do not find it difficult to adjust to cultural differences when visiting southern Africa. The people are generally friendly and open, especially the children. Travellers may encounter street vendors in some areas, but little overt poverty or begging. There are several chances to interact with locals on the tours, in the townships, cities and villages, at the Wisdom for Wildlife Trust, and during a home-hosted dinner. Guests will hear many different dialects, including at least one with clicks. African food is quite mild and not heavily spiced. Many types of meat are served, including impala, crocodile, ostrich, and lamb, as well as good salads and desserts.

SPECIAL FACTORS:
This tour covers a large area so
travellers can expect to encounter a range of temperatures. South Africa is warmest in January and February, Namibia, and Zimbabwe in October and November, and Botswana in December and January. Different areas on the tour have rainy periods at varying times, and every season brings with it a bonus, be it the lush foliage or active game and wildlife. General building, road and airport construction is quite prevalent in South Africa as the country prepares to host the Soccer World Cup in 2010.
