Today you visit Sydney, the heart and economic center of Cape Breton Island. Sydney’s coal shipping and steel manufacturing played a key role in the Allied victory during World War II’s Battle of the Atlantic, but today the region relies largely on tourism to fuel its economy.

Named for Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III, Charlottetown is the provincial capital of PEI. Originally settled by the French, the island was taken by the British at the height of the Seven Years’ War (and was later ransacked by Massachusetts-based privateers during the American Revolutionary War!).

The world’s largest estuary, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence is the outlet of North America’s Great Lakes via the Saint Lawrence River into the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the stunning scenery from the comfort of your world-class cruise ship as you head towards Québec City.

The narrow width of the river as it enters the town provided the name given to the city (Kébec being the Algonquin word meaning “where the river narrows”). Québec City is internationally known for its Summer Festival, Winter Carnival and the Château Frontenac, a hotel which dominates the city skyline. The ramparts surrounding Old Québec (Vieux-Québec) are the only remaining fortified city walls in the Americas north of Mexico, and were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985 as the “Historic District of Old Québec.”

In fact, the design and ornamentation of each station in the Metro system is unique!
Another underground delight is the city beneath Montreal — the world’s largest underground city at 20 miles in length! More than half a million people visit here each day, accessing the more than 2,000 stores, 200 restaurants, 1,200 offices, and 1,600 housing units that extend all over (under) the downtown area!

Following breakfast, you will transfer to the airport for your return flight home.
