Lake Manyara / Ngorongoro Crater
Cultural Connection: Enroute to Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll stop to tour and Gibbs Farm, which grows vegetables and coffee. Transfer to your lodgings, right on the rim of the Crater, and have lunch at the lodge. This is the world’s largest intact caldera, believed to have been created when a volcano the size of Mt. Kilimanjaro literally blew its top more than two million years ago. This afternoon, take in the spectacular views of the crater — and anticipate tomorrow’s exploration of its wonders. Set off early today from your lodge on Day 9 to experience one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries on a full-day tour. You’ll descend 2,000 feet into the crater, then spend the morning exploring the 102-square mile floor, perhaps viewing large herds of zebras and wildebeests or a small pride of lions. You might even spot the rare black rhino. In all, more than 25,000 animals call the crater home. After a picnic lunch overlooking the Crater, enjoy an afternoon game viewing before returning to the Lodge for dinner.

Ngorongoro / Serengeti National Park
Today, you’ll be driving through magnificent lands the local Maasai call Serengeti, or “endless plain.” Indeed, these grasslands seem to stretch into forever. Along the way, you’ll pause to view wildlife. You’ll also visit Olduvai Gorge, where Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey discovered traces of hominids dating back 2.5 million years. Arrive at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in time for lunch. (For an authentic tented camp experience, you may choose to upgrade to the Kirawira Camp Western Serengeti for an additional cost.) This afternoon, enjoy a game drive in the Serengeti. You’ll eat dinner at the Lodge this evening.
