Cape Town Cultural Township Tour
Cape Town, South Africa
Morning Tour, Day 17
Approximate Time:
3 hours
On this eye-opening tour you'll visit the poverty stricken townships
of Cape Town. Start off this unique cultural experience with a visit to
the District Six Museum, which up until the 1970s, was home to almost a
tenth of the city of Cape Town’s population. In 1965, the apartheid
government, declared District Six “white” and more than 60,000 people
were forcibly uprooted and relocated onto the barren plains of the Cape
Flats. We then depart for the Townships and Cape Flats, which while
seeking racial segregation under the apartheid, were created for
non-white population groups. As few houses were built, sprawling
satellite camps of seemingly endless shanties – makeshift structures of
various materials – provide little more than a roof and some shelter. As
you shall see, squatter settlements are seeking their own solutions as
an economic necessity. Against all odds, township life prevails, in all
its nuances. Your next stop will be a visit to Philani in Khayelitsha.
The creative output at Philani is an offshoot of the staff’s attempts to
alleviate malnutrition and unemployment. Philani’s aim is to empower
destitute families to ensure they become self-sufficient. With the help
of government social workers, the centre admits underweight children to
its nutrition project and simultaneously provides training opportunities
to their mothers. Philani’s weaving section makes rag mats from waste
fabric and sells them at craft markets in and around Cape Town. The
flagship project offers skills training and printing facilities to
unemployed mothers with pre-school children. Leaving the townships
behind, you’ll find that the experience is as sad as it is uplifting,
and go away with a better understanding of just what the city of Cape
Town is all about – from backyard shanty towns to beautiful beaches

Cape Town, South Africa
Half-day tour
Approximate Time:
4 hours
Your guided tour begins with a morning departure to Hout Bay, where you will board your cruise to the famous Seal Island — home to 75,000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 different bird species, and the hunting ground of the Great White Shark. After your cruise, you’ll take a short drive to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Kirstenbosch displays a wide variety of the unique plant life of the Cape Flora, as well as plants from all the diverse regions of southern Africa. There are over 7,000 species in cultivation at Kirstenbosch, including many rare and threatened species. The Garden covers 36 hectares in a 528-hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds. Kirstenbosch lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 — making Kirstenbosch the first botanic garden in the world to be included within a natural World Heritage Site.
